MetaMask Redesign

My Role

Lead Product Designer

Project Overview

When the first version of the product was released, it served as a proof of concept with several UX issues that needed to be addressed. The main challenge was to redesign the wallet from scratch while ensuring that the core features and capabilities for Web3 interactions were maintained. This meant that the design had to be completely overhauled to create an intuitive and user-friendly experience.

User Research

To understand the needs and preferences of our target users, we conducted extensive user research. We employed methods such as surveys, user interviews, and usability testing sessions. Our target audience consisted of technical users, including tech-savvy developers, and early adopters. Key demographics included individuals aged 18-30, mostly male, primarily from urban areas with varied education levels and income brackets.

From our research, we identified several pain points:

Ideating & Wireframes

We gathered together to take part in design thinking workshops, which provided us with the platform to collaborate and reflect on the different elements of a new design. We brainstormed and discussed a wide range of potential solutions, which ultimately served to inform the new version of the product.

Visual Design & Prototyping

I developed UI’s and prototypes, while developing a design system from scratch, ensuring that the design would be intuitive and user-friendly.

Usability Testing

We conducted usability testing with a group of 20 users, employing a remote testing tools to gather feedback efficiently, Dovetail. Users were asked to complete tasks related to accessing and interacting with the wallet's landing page. Overall, feedback was positive.

Outcomes and Results

The MetaMask extension was the first Web3 wallet that enabled developers and early adopters to use blockchain technologies with just a few clicks. With 20 million monthly active users and counting, I helped the team build the de facto Web3 wallet of today.

Designing a novel product in a nascent industry, there was no shortage of problems to be solved. Many of the UX and UI design patterns I helped define have become design standards today.
